1. Review the
handout I gave you at the first meeting in the series, ”Preview of Course
Design and Development” by Joe Harless (You can find it at this link in case
you weren’t at the first meeting)
2. Read Chapter 6, "Mathetics Programming" from the Air Force's Handbook For Designers of Instructional Systems, 1978. The title is not misspelled - Mathetics is derived from the Greek word for 'to learn.' Mathetics is Tom Gilbert's instructional design system and the predecessor to Harless' systems, which is Joe's highly evolved and operationalized version of mathetics. Here's the link.
3. Write down any questions about content
in the reading assignment, which we’ll discuss during the meeting. Also, be
prepared to comment on your reaction to the content in both readings—good, bad,
indifferent. Be prepared to explain why you feel that way—or, to explain how
you would do it, instead.
Coming in March
Starting in March, we’ll
begin a new series of meetings dedicated to busting popular performance
improvement myths. Our focus will be on exposing worthless or even
counter-productive performance improvement and management practices.
